High quality ESL instruction to non-native speakers of English
This course builds upon foundation English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing for everyday situations and academic purposes. The class is taught using a student-centered communicative approach to English language learning. The total time of the course is 216 hours.
Students will be able to communicate with and understand basic II level written, spoken, and aural English. Students read short texts, write short paragraphs about various topics introduced in class, and actively participate in class discussions. In this course, the focus is on improving students’ ability to understand written and spoken English, and improving their ability to communicate in real-world situations. Students practice listening skills through various types of audios. In addition, students discuss and present information to their classmates. The core competencies of reading, writing, listening, and speaking will be given equal importance.

In speaking, students are able to ask for repetition, clarification, give their opinion, present information from notes, introduce topics in a presentation and use eye contact, facial expressions, body language and express emotion. Students are able to source information and check listeners’ understanding. In terms of pronunciation, students are able to pronounce simple past -ed endings, the schwa sounds, the reduced pronunciation of be going to, and the simple present third-person -s/ -es correctly. Also students are able to use correct intonation in questions, link consonants to vowels, link vowel sounds with /w/ or /y/, and use content word stress in sentences.
Students are able to write a main idea and supporting sentences and put them in a complete paragraph with a topic sentence, supporting sentences and details and concluding sentences. Also, students are able to connect sentences with but, so and contrast ideas with however.
Students are able to use verbs + infinitives (like, want, and need), the simple present and simple past, sentences with when, prepositions of location, infinitives of purpose, clauses with before/ before that and after/ after that, comparative adjectives, should/ shouldn't and it’s+adjective+infinitive, be going to, the simple present for informal narratives, gerunds as subjects or objects, the conjunctions and and but, the imperative of be+adjective, so and such with adjectives correctly.
